Sowing & Reaping

We are what our hearts set out to do.

“Whatever a man sows, that he will also reap.” (Galatians 6:7)

Sometimes, strange or unfair things happen in the world, and we don’t always understand why.

But, one fact stays the same: what you give will be equally returned to you.

If you do good, good usually returns to you. If you do evil, evil may be returned to you too. Such is a summary of what it means to “reap what you sow”. It's like planting seeds—what you plant is what will grow.

Let’s look at a few Bible stories about this teaching:

  • Isaac and the Wells (Genesis 26:19-22)

Isaac’s workers dug a well to find water, but some people from Gerar said, “That water is ours!”.

Isaac didn’t fight with them. He moved and dug another well—and it happened again. Still, Isaac didn’t argue.

The third time they dug a well, no one argued at all. Isaac named that place Rehoboth, which means “wide”, because God gave them room and peace.

Isaac showed kindness and patience, and God gave him blessings and made his enemies leave him alone.

  •  King Adoni-Bezek (Judges 1:5-7)

A king named Adoni-Bezek once treated other kings badly by cutting off their thumbs and toes.

One day, he was captured, and the same thing happened to him.

He realised, “This is happening to me because I did this same thing to others.”. He was cruel before, and now, he was being treated the same way.

  • The Boy Who Shared His Lunch (Matthew 14:13–21; Mark 6:31–44; Luke 9:12–17; John 6:1–14)

One day, a boy gave Jesus five small loaves of bread and two fish.

That didn’t seem like a lot, but Jesus used it to feed over 5,000 people!

Everyone ate until they were full, and had 12 baskets of food to spare.

The boy gave a little, but Jesus turned it into a big blessing.

The Bible regularly reminds us: “Whatever you plant, that’s what you’ll grow.”. So, by relying fully on the Holy Spirit, let’s plant kindness, love, and patience—just as Jesus wants us to.

Family Altar

Use these discussion questions and our prayer as a guide for your family altar.
Parents can lead the prayer and invite their children to repeat after them or encourage their children to take the lead, making family altar time a shared journey of faith.

Discussion Questions:

  • Can you think of a time when something good happened to you after you were kind?

  • Who is your favourite Bible character who was blessed for being kind and patient?

  • What can you do today to plant seeds of kindness for Jesus?

Prayer in Words:

In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, we pray.

O Lord, help us do good and not be selfish. Help us be kind, patient, and loving, so that others can see You in our lives.

Lord, may everything we say and do lead our friends and family to want to know You and the true church more.

Hallelujah, Amen.
