Humbly inquire of the Lord

King David grows in strength and honour—not just as a ruler, but as a man who depends fully on God. His successes come from recognising and wholly acknowledging that “the LORD had established him as king over Israel, and that his kingdom was highly exalted, for the sake of His people Israel.” (1 Chron 14:2). David understood the importance and gravity of his position and authority from God, and that they pointed only towards God’s purpose and people.

As David settled into his new role, challenges met him as they did before. The Philistines learned that he had been anointed king, and immediately rose up against him. Instead of rushing into battle, David inquired of the Lord for wisdom and deliverance.

The Philistines, still determined in their resolve to bring David to ruin, tried again. David never assumed that God’s previous instruction would apply in the same way. Once more, he sought the Lord. And this time, God ordered a different mode of deliverance: instead of attacking head-on, David was to circle around and wait for the sound of marching in the tops of baka-shrubs—a sign that God had gone ahead of him.

David’s repeated inquiry is a testament to his fear and reverence of God’s will and sovereignty. Our experiences, however comparable, never guarantee the same outcomes and consequences. Trust and obedience to God is, therefore, an everyday commitment.

How often do we rely on what worked before, avoid what failed, and neglect asking God what He would have us do now? Whether it’s decisions in church, school, work, relationships, or mundane responsibilities, God desires that we walk closely with Him.

Because David followed God’s instructions in their entirety, “the fame of David spread in all the lands; and the Lord brought the fear of him on all the nations.” (1 Chron 14:17). Ultimately, God alone established David.

Pausing, praying, and seeking God above all is the least, and at times, the most we should do. A victorious life is not one that independently strives harder, or for more; it is one consisted of mindful strides made with God right beside.

Discussion questions:

  • What does David’s habit of asking God before acting teach us about decision-making?

  • Why is it important not to rely only on past experiences when facing present challenges?

  • What is something you should pause and seek God first?

  • How can you build a daily habit of inquiring of the Lord?
