Giving thanks to God should be more than just a response to a single victory - it should be an enduring song, encompassing every aspect of our lives.

Sustained worship and spiritual discipline

In 1 Chronicles 16, David brings the ark of the covenant to Jerusalem with great rejoicing. After making offerings before God, he blessed the people and appointed Levites to minister continually before the ark, ensuring that praises to God would not end after the initial celebration was over. David’s song of thanksgiving repeatedly calls God’s people to remember His mighty works, proclaim His salvation, and declare His glory among the nations.

One striking truth from this chapter is that worship is meant to be sustained, not sporadic. It is easy to praise God after a prayer is answered, a door opens, or a burden is lifted. Yet, David understood that God’s worthiness does not fluctuate with our circumstances. God is forever worthy of praise. Instead of allowing worship to be confined to special occasions, David established a pattern of continual thanksgiving and remembrance.

“So he left Asaph and his brothers there before the ark of the covenant of the Lord to minister before the ark regularly, as every day’s work required.” (1 Chronicles 16:37)

David also reminds the people that remembering is a spiritual discipline. He exhorts them to “Remember His marvelous works which He has done” (v. 12). It is very easy to forget, especially as we go about our busy lives. Many things take away our attention from remembering. But intentionally recalling God’s faithfulness strengthens our confidence that the God who carried us in the past will continue to remain faithful in the future.

David’s song also encourages us to broaden our vision beyond just ourselves. Worship is not always private. God’s people are called to “declare His glory among the nations, His wonders among all peoples” (v. 24). Gratitude will naturally overflow into witness. A heart that has been captivated by God’s goodness cannot remain silent for long. As we testify to His grace, we are inviting others to know the God who reigns over all the earth.

The song closes with a beautiful prayer: “Oh, give thanks to the Lord, for He is good! For His mercy endures forever” (v. 34). These words that have been echoed in generations past remain just as true today, because they are rooted in God’s unchanging character. His goodness and mercy remain constant through seasons of joy, uncertainty, success, and sorrow.

Today, let us consider whether our worship of God depends primarily on what God has done for us recently or on who He has always been. Build a habit of remembering. Give thanks even in ordinary moments. Speak of His goodness to others. Like how David established a continual worship before the ark, let our praises become a daily offering that continues long after our mountaintop experiences have passed. The God who is forever faithful is also forever worthy of continual praise.

Reflection questions:

  • What specific evidence of God’s faithfulness do you need to intentionally remember today?

  • Is your worship primarily driven by your circumstances, or by God’s unchanging character?

  • How can you intentionally declare God’s goodness to someone this week through your words or actions?
