The battles recorded in this chapter reveal how God granted David victory after victory. In 2 Samuel 8:1–2, David defeated the Moabites, killed two-thirds of them and brought the nation under his rule. It is interesting to remember that David’s ancestor, Ruth, was from Moab. This reminds us that God’s plans often work in ways that are far beyond what we can understand.
People who do not have faith may explain success as the result of skill, strategy, or even luck. However, David always recognized that it was the Lord who gave him victory. In the same way, we are reminded not to take credit for what God has done through us. As Paul says in his epistle to the Philippians, “For it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure” (Philippians 2:13). In the end, every achievement points back to God’s grace and power working in our lives.
David was a victorious and righteous king, and his reign gives us a picture of something even greater to come—the perfect and righteous reign of Christ. If David’s kingdom was marked by victory and justice, how much greater would the kingdom of Christ be. His kingdom will never end, and it will be perfectly righteous, and complete in every way.
The good news for us is that through Jesus Christ, we have been brought close to God through His sacrificial blood. As Paul says in his epistle to the Ephesians, “But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far away have been brought near by the blood of Christ” (Ephesians 2:13). Because of Jesus, we are no longer separated from God. Instead, we have been forgiven, reconciled, and restored into a living relationship with God. All of this is made possible only through His grace and love.
When David received gifts from King Tou, he dedicated them to the Lord, recognizing that everything he received ultimately came from God and should be used for His glory. In the same way, we may sometimes think that our blessings, abilities, and possessions come from our own hard work. But the Bible reminds us, “Every good and perfect gift is from God” (James 1:17).
So, we should ask ourselves: What has God entrusted to us, and have we offered it back to Him for His glory? God is able to guide us in using what He has given us wisely. Our responsibility is to have a willing heart and to act faithfully. When we live this way, we learn to be good stewards of His blessings and bring glory to His name in everything we do.
