Hurt men hurt God.

These were Absalom's words to Hushai! After seizing his father’s throne, Ahithophel urged Absalom to quickly pursue his father, strike when they were tired and hungry, and eliminate King David once and for all. This sound advice pleased Absalom. Interestingly, Ahitophel’s advice was always regarded as if one had inquired at the oracle of God, yet this time Absalom still needed to hear from Hushai (2 Samuel 16:23). Therefore, he asked Hushai for counsel to see whether it matched Ahitophel's, since both were trusted advisors. Contrary to Ahithophel’s suggestion, Hushai advised him to first gather all the Israelites and launch an attack on David and his followers. Doing it this way would secure his victory. Instead of listening to Ahithophel, Absalom took Hushai’s advice, thereby missing the great opportunity to eliminate King David and his followers. This happened because the Lord had purposed to defeat Ahithophel's good advice.

David’s experience showed us God’s righteousness and mercy. Because of his actions in the matter concerning Uriah the Hittite (1 Kings 5:5), the Lord pronounced judgment, stating that the sword would never leave his house (2 Samuel 12:10). God did not take away the earthly consequences of David's choices. For mankind's sin, consequences are inevitable, and the Lord’s mercy does not eliminate them, yet his mercy is seen and felt when we face them. He still had to flee his home in tears. In His great mercy, God protected David during dangerous times. The Lord remained faithful and did not forsake him, which prompted him to write Psalm 3 while fleeing from Absalom.

I lay down and slept; I awoke, for the Lord sustained me. I will not be afraid of ten thousands of people. Who have set themselves against me all around. (Psalm 3: 5 – 6)

During times of trials and discipline, let us remember that God's love persists and He continues to show His mercy. Let His love motivate us from sinning and actions that would grieve Him, because our love for Him makes us unwilling to grieve our Lord.

Reflection questions

  1. Ahithophel's advice was based on human wisdom, while Hushai’s counsel appealed to Absalom’s pride. When making significant decisions, how can we distinguish between "good advice" that honours God and advice that merely appeals to our pride?

  2. David still had to face the painful consequences of his past mistakes, but God's love and protection never abandoned him. Why is it comforting to realise that even when we stumble and face consequences, God’s mercy remains right there with us?
