Similar to the many songs David composed, David begins, first and foremost, by sharpening the focus on God. He recognises that His every success, His every setback, His every rescue, came from God alone.
David vividly and extensively describes how God saved him—from overwhelming danger, dire distress, and what felt like the “snares of death.” In his darkest moments, he almost always cried out to the Lord, and God, as always, heard him.
Although it is no wonder that all of creation is at the mercy of the Creator, wholly experiencing this truth in the flesh remains a wonder.
“Then the earth shook and quaked,
The foundations of heaven were trembling
And were shaken, because He was angry.
He also bowed the heavens down low, and came down
With thick darkness under His feet.
He made darkness canopies around Him,
A mass of waters, thick clouds of the sky.
From the brightness before Him
Coals of fire were kindled.
Then the channels of the sea appeared,
The foundations of the world were exposed…”
If even the immeasurable magnitude of this physical reality crumbles and falls away before the dominion of God, what holds us back from bringing the little heavy burdens of our hearts before God?
God responds to those who trust and walk with Him. David speaks about righteousness—not perfection, but a sincere desire to fully follow God’s ways. God delights in and gives grace to those who are humble and depend on Him. It is through our reliance on God that we can, like David, be equipped with strength for the roads ahead, wisdom for road blocks along the way, and guaranteed victory, whatever shape or form that takes.
David’s song is an enduring declaration of his personal testimony and understanding of God’s character. When we model after David’s heart of perpetual praise and gratitude, simply because God is our faithful, unwavering, just, and merciful protector, our own hearts are compelled to be just as steadfast in our faith and hope in God.
