Bitter Sweet Hearts

How can we keep our hearts tender and sweet?

“Guard your heart" means we must be careful about what we let stay inside our hearts. Most of the time, we think about keeping out bad thoughts or sinful ideas. But, there is another danger that can quietly sneak in—bitterness.

Bitterness is like a tiny seed that grows into a big, prickly plant. Bitterness can start growing when someone hurts us, when things don’t go our way, or when we feel sad for very long stretches of time. If we don’t manage such negativity in our lives, bitterness can take deep root and make us angry, unforgiving, and push us far from God.

The Bible tells us about a woman named Naomi. Her name means “sweet". After many sad things happened in her life, she told people to call her “Mara", which means “bitter.” Naomi was so hurt that her heart carried only grief and bitterness.

The Israelites also once found water that was too bitter to drink. But, God made the water sweet again. This shows us something important—only God can change bitterness into sweetness.

When we are hurt, upset, or wronged, we should not keep those thoughts and feelings inside. Instead, we can pray and tell God everything. God’s love is powerful. It can wash away bitterness and fill our hearts with peace and joy.

When our hearts are full of God’s love, there is no room for bitterness. Just as God turned bitter water into sweet water, He can make our hearts gentle, humble, and filled only with His love.

Family Altar

Use these discussion questions and our prayer as a guide for your family altar.

Parents can lead the prayer and invite their children to repeat after them or encourage their children to take the lead, making family altar time a shared journey of faith.

Discussion Questions:

  • Have you ever felt hurt or upset with someone? What did you do?

  • Why is bitterness harmful to our hearts?

  • How can God help us when we feel sad or angry?

  • What are some ways you can show kindness instead of holding onto hurt?

Prayer in Words:

In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, we pray.

Thank You for loving us so much.

Sometimes, when we are hurt or upset,

We keep those feelings in our hearts,

And have a hard time letting them go.

Please forgive us when we let bitterness grow in our hearts.

Help us turn away from anger and turn to You instead.

Fill our hearts with Your love, peace, and kindness,

And make them sweet and clean, just like Yours.

Hallelujah, Amen.
