Holiday Blues

The Fear of Missing Out on God

The mid-year holidays are usually packed with fun parties and exciting activities. Many travel and spend a lot of time with friends. It can feel like one of the happiest months of the year.

But sometimes, not everyone feels this way.

Some feel left out, not having as many plans lined up. Some feel sad seeing people they know have fun without them. Some are anxious because the year didn’t turn out the way they hoped. These feelings can be labelled as “holiday blues”—and, like "Monday blues", it’s okay to feel such feelings.

Here are four simple ways to help us through these blues:

1. Look Back and See God’s Love
The Bible reminds us in Lamentations 3:22–23 that God’s love never fails. Even in hard times, God is taking care of us. When we look back, we might see that He helped us, protected us, or taught us something life-changing.

2. Talk to Someone Trustworthy
God gives us friends and family to support us. Proverbs 17:17 says a friend loves at all times. We don’t need many friends—just one person we can talk to honestly. Opening up helps us remember we are not alone.

3. Do Something Meaningful
Instead of staying bored or sad, try doing something kind for others. We can serve more at church, encourage friends, or spend more time with family. When we put others before ourselves, God fills our hearts with joy.

4. Celebrate Small Wins
To God, big things matter as much as those that are small. Trying our best, praying for others, or choosing to be kind, all matter to Him. Those faithful in little things are faithful also in much; and those unrighteous in little things are unrighteous also in much.

So, how can we remain blue knowing that God sees us, loves us, and is always working for our good?

Family Altar

Use these discussion questions and our prayer as a guide for your family altar.

Parents can lead the prayer and invite their children to repeat after them or encourage their children to take the lead, making family altar time a shared journey of faith.

Discussion Questions:

  • What is one good thing God has done for you this year?

  • Who is one person you can talk to when you feel sad?

  • What is one small way you can help someone this week?

Prayer in Words:

In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, we pray.

Thank You for loving us all the time.

When we feel sad or left out,

Help us remember Your goodness and have faith in You.

Please give us the courage to

Share our troubles with those we trust,

And find ways to help others.

Fill our hearts with Your peace and joy

As we make the most of our holidays.

Hallelujah, Amen.
