This chapter, the shortest in the book of Ezekiel, is interestingly followed by the longest chapter (chapter 16 with sixty-three verses). Nevertheless, there remains a powerful message that we need to pay special heed to.

God specifically describe His people as a vine that is brought out from Egypt and planted in the fertile land of Canaan. (Ps 80: 8 - 11) Though weak and frail, they thrive because of God's care and protection, because God removed greater and mightier enemies from the land (Deut 7:1).

And for what purpose did God do so?

The people were to honour Him by producing fruits of high quality and value (Jer 2:21). But sadly, this was not so.

If we are fruitless, we are just merely wasting the ground that supplies the nutrients. Just like in the parable of the barren fig tree in Luke 13:6 - 9, we face the end of being cut down. (Incidentally the wood of fig tree, according to some, is like the vine is also not useful.  What more a burnt vine or wood, which will be even more useless).

So let us see ourselves in the right light, to continue in the grace of God, walking humbly with Him, bearing fruits worthy of His praise, and serving Him faithfully.
